Welcome to April! Easter is coming, and the etched coloured glass eggs I ordered as my treat arrived yesterday; now I’m trying to figure out how to construct an indoor Easter bush that does not entice the cat into potential disaster.
First, though, we have to get through the pranks and hijinks associated with April Fool’s Day, known in my home province of Quebec as Poisson d’avril, or April Fish.

My French Catholic school took Easter celebrations seriously, but we also marked Poisson d’avril with paper fish that had a purely secular meaning (I think? although can a fish ever be without religious significance?).
April is my month of new beginnings, and I’ll be doing two things on this blog:
- Sharing some bits and pieces from my work-in-progress about Canadian women’s crime fiction. You can expect short essays and excerpts on Atwood’s Alias Grace, Robber Bride, and short fiction; several of Munro’s stories; and Carol Shields’s Swann: A Mystery.
- Exploring Scandi Noir crime fiction (interpreted broadly, to include Iceland), for a fun online course that I’ve been conceiving for a while. First up will be a new novel that I read courtesy of NetGalley. It’s scary and atmospheric and really well plotted, so I highly recommend acquiring Freyja by Margrét Ann Thors when it comes out this summer.
But all of that will be after Passover and Easter and the administrative chores in which I am embroiled. See you soon.
